It is merely to the find yourself that it starts to break apart, although slap-upwards finale rescues it about ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can wisely dialogued, it will have no high issue in way of life off its very ugly name.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin told you “The movie actions during the a quick rate, the fresh conversation was smooth and you may characterisations basically effective. Richard Brody throughout the The latest Yorker listed “That it terse and taut film noir is considering the new romantic and professional disputes of one’s title profile, the brand new violent genius (starred from the Cock Powell) at the rear of a fashionable illegal gambling enterprise. The new film’s creator and director, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess video game, for mortal bet, between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) spent some time working from the casino and you may old a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic software, new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures of like and you may possibility, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can smartly assertive pictures (along with his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet outlined spectacle a low profile antique of your own style.” [ 10 ]

Whilst spot observe a common trend, the latest characterizations try fresh and also the activities good enough to help you overbalance. Dialog try terse and you will relevant, preventing the psychological, phoney touching. Uncommon camera angles arrive occasionally in order to heighten appeal and you may temporarily arrest the interest. Solid teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling as manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand spanking new blogger and you may affiliate manufacturer, together with helps with making it a mellow design.” [ 11 ]

It is mostly an issue of enjoying Mr. Powell undergo their paces smartly if you’re an enormous throw out of stars and you will stars give him classic service. Evelyn Keyes plays the good absolutely nothing lady which brings forth the finest in your and you will Ellen Drew is the smooth and you may slinky vixen just who becomes him to your jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy while the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a different able trip because a weary police inspector whom in the end shuts the fact. A great deal of sipping and you can smoking is carried out by all of the alarmed.” [ several ]
